The Cirrus SR20 has been mostly overlooked by the mod and STC community as not being worth the effort. We hear things like “It’s not turbo’d” — “It runs hot” — “can’t haul much” and “the SR20 has a never ending weight problem with each new iteration of the airframe.” We at Midwest Aircraft Refinishing, together with our friends, are determined to make some of that change and enhance the SR20. We worked with MT Propeller and other friends to help make this a reality. Alas, please welcome the newly STC’d3 blade MT composite propeller for the SR20.
What does this new composite MT propeller offer for the Cirrus SR20? This is what the new owners of this propeller are saying:
The vibration reduction is significant. You won’t recognize the engine if you had a shaker before.
Weight. Approximately 30lbs to 36lbs lighter (depending on your configuration) than the stock propellers ֠thatӳ weight off the nose! Especially for the SR20 G3 aircraft with air conditioning, this is a big deal!
Cooling:The SR20 runs much cooler with this propeller versus the stock 3 blade and 2 blade propellers.
Deceleration. It has equivalent aerobreaking effect as the stock 3 blade propeller.
Cost.A new 3 blade Hartzel – the stock 3 blade propeller – sells for $18,000: this propeller is a lot less than $18,000. Email or call us for details.
Proper Starter Required. If you have a lightweight starter (like the Skytec ST-3 or ST-5) you will need to replace it with a more robust starter like the TCM Energizer. Spinning at 60 rpm with the Skytec versus 200 rpm of the bigger Energizer is important for starter adapter life and ensuring that there is less of a chance of kickback(potentially ruining a set of magnetos).
Here are the performance stats for the new 3 blade MT composite propeller for the SR20:
Right after the STCwas issued, Midwest Aircraft Refinishing ordered 17 of these propellers for our SR20 customers-8 in black and 9 in white. Here is the first batch of 8 propellers right after they arrived at our facility:
Our customers are extremely happy with the new MT composite propeller. The increase in useful load, the CG advantage of getting so much weight off the nose, the smooth running versus the stock propellers, and the cooling performance are among the most popular advantages over the stock propellers. It also looks great on the SR20!
